FAMILY: Born to James (1852-1919) and Louisa M. LaFlame Pope (1870-); both born in Canada. Two sisters, Mary L. Pope Redding (1890-1945) and Dora M. Pope Sullivan (1896-1962).


CIRCUMSTANCES: The American ST Federal was torpedoed on April 30, 1942, by the German U-boat U-507. The vessel was en route from Tampa, Florida, to Nanes, Cuba, in ballast. Five men lost their lives in the sinking, while twenty-eight were rescued. [minnehallen.no]

Sunk on January 13, 1943, in the South Atlantic north-west of Fortaleza, Brazil, in position 01.38S, 39.52W, by depth charges from a US Catalina aircraft (VP-83 USN/P-10). 54 dead (all hands lost). [uboat.net]
