CIRCUMSTANCES: SS Jack, a freighter, was sunk in the Caribbean with a crew of 29, 3 armed guards, and 7 Army personnel. On the morning of May 27, 1942, SS Jack was torpedoed by U-558 while about 100 miles off the coast of Haiti. The ship sank quickly, and the port lifeboat was swamped by the ship’s undertow. Most survivors were picked up four days later; however, seven survivors spent 32 days on a raft before being rescued.
