From the Dayton Daily News September 13, 1998
PAINESVILLE (AP) – A Medal of Honor winner from the Korean War will honor a medal winner from the Civil War in special ceremonies today in Lake County.
Ron Rosser, 68, of Crooksville in southeastern Ohio, who received the Medal of Honor in 1952 from President Harry Truman, will lead the ceremonies dedicating the Medal of Honor plaque at Howell B. Treat’s grave.
The ceremony at Evergreen Cemetery will mark the culmination of ceremonies that will include a Civil War reenactment, a parade, and a flyby of Air Force Reserve planes.
Treat fought with the 52nd Ohio Volunteer Infantry in the Civil War. He won the Medal of Honor for valor on May 11, 1863, during a battle with Confederate soldiers at Buzzards’ Roost, George, just south of Chattanooga, Tennessee. The medal was awarded in 1894.
Treat returned to Painesville, northeast of Cleveland, after the war, raised a family, and died in 1912. His grave marker does not indicate his military honor.
The omission will be corrected with a bronze plaque. The oversight was found this year by Bonnie Walker, 47, while working on an internship to identify veterans at the cemetery.
