Citation to accompany the award of the Bronze Star Medal with Valor
For heroic achievement in connection with combat operations against the enemy as Assault Team Leader for a highly sensitive Joint Task Force operation in direct support of Operation Iraqi Freedom on 6 July 2007. Petty Officer Lewis displayed heroic bravery in the face of the enemy. His team completed a direct action operation targeting high-value individuals with follow-on tasking to recover an unattended sensor. After completing actions on the objective and as the convoy evacuated from the objective area, the task unit was ambushed while entering a channelized area. The convoy was then struck by an explosive device that pierced the high mobility multi-wheeled vehicle (HMMWV) cabin, sheared the .50 caliber machine gun barrel, and penetrated the troop compartment area where Petty Officer Lewis was located. Bravely exposing himself to enemy fire, Petty Officer Lewis was mortally wounded in a heroic attempt to provide additional security to his team. By his extraordinary guidance, zealous initiative, and total dedication to duty, Petty Officer Lewis reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.

Petty Officer 1st Class Jason Dale Lewis of the United States Navy SEALs of Virginia Beach, Va., formerly of Brookfield, beloved husband of Donna (Tyransky) Lewis, died of injuries sustained in combat. He was born in Danbury on June 30, 1977, the cherished son of Jean Mariano of New Milford and Dale Lewis. Jason lived in Brookfield for most of his life. He enjoyed fly fishing, rock climbing, cycling, and all outdoor activities. He was a devoted father who loved spending time with his family. In addition to his parents and his wife, Donna, he will be sadly missed by his three children: Jack, Max, and Grace; his maternal grandparents, Joseph and Frances Mariano of Brookfield; his sister, Jennie Schell and her husband, Kenneth, of New Milford; his mother and father-in-law, Jack and Doris Tyransky, of Brookfield; his sister-in-law, Kerri Eannarino and her husband, Brett, of Brookfield. He is also survived by several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins. Funeral services will be held at the First Assembly of God in Brookfield on Saturday, July 14, 2007, at 11 a.m. Burial in Center Cemetery, New Milford, with full military honors, will follow. The family will receive friends at the First Assembly of God on Friday, July 13, 2007, from 4 to 8 p.m. The Cornell Memorial Home is in charge of arrangements.
