CIRCUMSTANCES: The SS Losmar was torpedoed and sunk about 250 miles west of Cape Comorin, India, by Japanese submarine I-165. 25 Merchant Mariners and 2 Navy Armed Guards lost their lives.

She was sunk by a United States Navy patrol bomber of Patrol Bomber Squadron 142 (VPB-142) on 27 June 1945 in the Mariana Islands at 15°28′N 153°39′E.

TWO MERCHANT MARINES MISSING

Washington, Dec. 4 – (AP) – The names of two Connecticut men, both of whom are missing, were included today in the Navy Department’s third list of Merchant Marine casualties. Covering the period from October 22 to November 21, the list carried 305 names. Seventeen were listed as dead, and 288 were missing. There were 12 others whose names were not listed because their next of kin live in foreign countries. The Connecticut men missing were Boatswain Patrick Daniel Coleman, husband of Mrs. Mae Coleman of 33 Hickory Street, Waterbury, and Galleyman John William Hastings, son of Mrs. Margaret Hastings of 244 Arthur Street, New Haven.
